Smart Start

Smart Start (Pro) is for runs at a low Power Level. Many owners start a low run at full power for a few minutes, and finish it at full power before the heater stops. Smart Start does both for you. Your heater's manual may have its own advice.

Why start high

A diesel heater burns best when it's hot. Starting at full power gets it hot quickly before it settles to a low level, and finishing at full power ends the run hot. Runs that stay low for a long time, starts that are stopped part-way, and failed starts are when heaters most often start to smoke or run poorly.

How a run goes

  1. The app starts the heater at your Power Level (say 3).
  2. From the flame, Power Level 10 for 5 minutes (or 3 or 10: your choice).
  3. Then back to your Power Level for the rest of the run.
  4. Before a planned stop (a timer, the end of a Heat Schedule window), Power Level 10 for the last 15 minutes. The heater still stops on time, and your Power Level is set back while it's off, ready for next time.

Which runs

  • Runs the app starts at Power Level 9 or lower: your Start in the app, timers and Heat Schedules.
  • Not King Thermostat's runs: King already runs at full power and swings on and off like a house furnace.
  • Not a run started at the heater's panel or with a remote.
  • Not while the heater runs its own thermostat.
  • No full-power start while the battery is low (Battery Saver).

Good to know

  • It warms the space at the start and the end of a run. Plan for it in a small space.
  • Changing the Power Level yourself in the first minutes ends Smart Start for that run, and your change stands.
  • Stop in the app stops the heater as usual. For a stop at full power, use Clean and stop on the Cleaning Cycle card.
  • Stopped in the first minutes, your Power Level is set back once the heater is off.
  • A Smart Start run gets the full-power finish before every planned stop, even when Cleaning Cycle is off or a clean isn't due.
